[edit] Buying Equipment

First, go to the Armory and buy some weapons and armor — you'll find the link at the top of any Duels page, just click "Armory." Your avatar starts with 25 gold; spend it wisely! It's important to note that all equipment requires "power" to wear. The power consumption of the weapons and armor you have equipped counts toward a limit determined by your avatar's available power. You can check your available power by looking at the sidebar on the left of any page, alongside "pwr." There, you'll see two numbers: the first is the total power consumed by all of the equipment your avatar is currently wearing. The second, which appears in [brackets], is your avatar's power limit. You can also find this information at the top of the loadout screen, explained below.

[edit] Putting It On

Once you've purchased some equipment, click on the "Loadout" link in the left sidebar to try it on. From here, you can see all your available items, as well as the various equipment slots available on your avatar — places to equip things like swords, helmets, boots and shields. Drag and drop items from your inventory on the right onto the equipment slots on the left to wear them. You don't have to get them in exactly the right spot; they'll go to where they fit automatically. When you're finished, make sure you save your loadout. You won't be able to fight until you save at least one loadout.

[edit] Combat

There are two major types of duels:

  • Challenge - These count toward your record, and the other player has to accept before the fight takes place. They also grant more experience points and better rewards.
  • Skirmish - These don't count toward your record, and take place without requiring the other player's interaction. Good for practice and scouting, but they give less experience and fewer rewards.

[edit] Arena

You can browse other users, as well as computer-controlled characters (NPCs), and initiate duels with them by clicking the "Arena" link at the top of any page. Additionally, you'll find links to tournaments and ladders in the sidebar on the right-hand side of the page.

[edit] Tournaments

Tournaments in Duels are conducted in a single-elimination format, and are held between 8-64 participants at a time. Tournaments impose restrictions on the level of players who can enter in order to maintain a level playing field. Entry into a tournament generally requires the payment of a small gold fee, and gold prizes are awarded to the first-, second- and third-place finishers.

[edit] Ladders

Once you reach level 20, you'll be able to compete in ladders. Ladders in Duels are open to an unlimited number of entrants at any time, but each ladder requires participating players to be of a certain level range, in order to maintain a level playing field. Winning and losing ladder duels affects your player's rating on that ladder. If you win, your rating goes up, and if you lose, it goes down. Every week, usually Friday mornings, the players are sorted according to their rating, and the top players in each ladder are awarded tokens for participation, with the higher ranking players receiving more tokens.

[edit] Paths

At level 5, you will be able to choose a path; these paths are similar to classes in most role-playing games. There are two paths from which to choose: the Sword, and the Staff. When your character reaches level 20, you can choose a high path depending on your previously chosen path:

[edit] Actions

At level 25, you will be able to use actions in your Duels. Actions add an extra layer of strategy to combat, with a selection of actions that are available to all players, as well as several sets of actions which are exclusive to specific high paths, further differentiating individual characters.
