Challenge Coins

In the early kingdom era of Machan, the fealty of the noble houses was recognized and honored by the bestowing of special stones. These stones were originally called Kingstones, as they were awarded by the hand of the king to the head of the noble house in question. It was a very rare and distinct honor for a house to be so recognized and with this recognition came various perquisites—exemption from yearly tribute, land grants, peerages, governorships, and other entitlements. In time, the noble houses themselves began to bestow what they called Challenge Coins on those whose services went above and beyond fealty. Challenge Coins also played an important role in cementing alliances between houses—alliances that so often played out to tragic effect during the Succession Wars/Era of the False Emperors (461 – 700 ME).

By the time of King Harkan’s reign (1 – 51 MKII) the awarding of Challenge Coins grew to include the dueling nobility. During these early years of Harkan’s rule, sport dueling among the nobility (and to a certain extent, the common folk) became a cultural obsession. Great dueling arenas and halls were built to accommodate the enthralled masses. Noble houses quickly established dueling chapters, leagues and schools, and the rivalries between them often grew quite intense, if not outright infamous. For the duelist, all of this meant better training, care, wealth, and above all—recognition. Indeed, the crowning jewels of recognition for a duelist, aside from a spectacular career, were the awarding of Challenge Coins by wealthy houses.

With the dueling death of Prince Arkiras in 200 MKII and the subsequent prohibition that forced the sport “underground” for the nobility (provincial dueling went on, albeit cautiously, on the empire’s fringes), Challenge Coins became an anonymous “gift” bestowed on favored duelists by wealthy nobles. This anonymous awarding of Challenge Coins continues in Phyrra, much as the use of Shadow Fighting, as a way of honoring the historical traditions of the sport. For the duelist, such gifts can translate into gold, better equipment, more inventory space, and special abilities.

Challenge Coins can be bought to game using real money (transactions via PayPal). Challenge Coins can also be used instead of money or tokens.
