Miyatana
From Duels Content
Of Miyatana’s (also called Tas Marak) past not much is known. The man who would create the greatest armory and warrior school of the Machan First Kingdom was said to have been shipwrecked off the coast of Heldium, in the south of Felsha, from where he soon made his way across the southern Talas Mountains and north to Tamdom. It was in this western Machan city that he began his legendary career as a fierce and unorthodox duelist.
In his later years, he related the curious tale of his coming to Makanis. In his famed treatises on dueling and the fighting disciplines of the Great Circle School, Book of the Great Circle and Book of Six Elements, he wrote that he had been traveling by boat along the inland sea of Seto, in the Empire of Yamato, when a strange storm arose from the east and raced to engulf them.
“The winds wailed like bereaved women and battered the small boat with icy clawed hands. The sea and sky became as one lightning-pierced blackness, raging within and without. We were assaulted upon our bodies and in our minds with a bright cutting madness. This was sorcery beyond any I had encountered and no mantra, no mudra, no earthly weapon could stem its power. In its suffocating throes, I became lost and soon surrendered to shrieking darkness and then into deathly silence. When I awoke, the sea was still under a cloudless summer’s sky; the boat a floating wreck. I was alone. After three days of drifting, I came to a landfall..."
Indeed, Miyatana had come to Makanis and became the greatest swordsman, swordsmith, and armorer of the early Machan First Kingdom. After a brilliant career as a wandering duelist, where he introduced into Machan martial tradition the deadly Dual-Handed Drifting Crow style of fighting, he retired to the Talas Mountains where he began an intensive study of the elemental natures that governed mind, body, and spirit. Here, he delved deeply into these forces and soon began to harness and adapt them to various ninpo fighting styles. Out of this intensive study and practice came the formulation of his now legendary six elemental disciplines of the Great Circle School:
Earth (grounding, strength, Alpha and Omega, death): Degrees 1 – 6
Water (flowing, nurturing, malleability, life): Degrees 1 – 6
Air (instability, intellect, chance, luck): Degrees 1 - 6
Fire (consuming, passion, binding, fearlessness): Degrees 1 - 6
Spirit (oneness, mindfulness, freedom, evolution): Degrees 1 - 6
Master of Elements (totality, mastery, invincible, transcendence): Degrees 7 - 10
As word of Miytana’s deep wisdom spread throughout the empire, eager novices soon began to make pilgrimages into the Talas Mountains, hoping to learn from this master. It was in this way that the Great Circle School was formed. In time, the school produced, and still produces, fighters, swordsmiths, and armorers of incredible skill—-and the exceptional weapons and armor befitting such accomplished warriors. Among the many bladed wonders to come out of the Talas Mountains, the greatest have become known as the Five Treasures of Steel: Earth Cutting Blade, River Cutting Blade, Drifting Crow, Fire Turning Blade and Spirit Lightning.
